Humility is the true evaluation of ourselves with all our limitations. If we’re truly humble, we’ll admit our shortcomings, but we’ll also recognize our God-given qualities and abilities. As we grow in self-knowledge and humility, we should desire to serve God and others in ways best suited for our talents. Humility urges us to do good for others without attracting attention or expecting applause; a realistic opinion of ourselves prompts us to give credit for gifts and successes to God. The secret to winning heaven? Losing our self-love in the virtue of humility. “Whoever, therefore, shall humble himself as a little child will be greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:4).
