Extracurricular Activities

St. Louis Catholic School offers a variety of extracurricular activities for all talents and interests. Below are just some of the activities offered to students.
 
ALTAR SERVERS
Boys in grades 4-8 who are active, participating Catholics and have made the Sacrament of First Holy Communion, may choose to serve the school and parish community by assisting the priest at the altar.
 
BAND
The band program is part of the Garwood Whaley Music Program, which is the instrumental music program for schools in the Diocese of Arlington. Students in grades 4-8 may participate.
 
CHORUS
St. Louis has a choir for 5th-8th grades. The groups perform twice a year - at the Christmas Concert in December and the Spring Concert in May.
 
CYO SPORTS
St. Louis students often participate in sports through the parish CYO program. Students in grades 3-8 may join Track, Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball and Cheerleading.
 
GIRLS ON THE RUN (GOTR) & HEART AND SOLE
GOTR is for girls in 4th and 5th grades, while Heart and Sole is for 6th through 8th grade girls. These programs are designed to empower girls to be their best by teaching them the skills they need to be strong, confident and healthy women. They are so much more than running programs! They are self-confidence, self-esteem building programs. Practices are twice a week with the season beginning at the end of September and ending in December culminating with a 5K run by all the participants. GIRL SCOUTS
St. Louis parish has a very active Girl Scout program with a troop for almost every grade. Girls Scouts earn badges and awards; take leadership with community service projects; take trips to museums and cultural events; and even travel to different regions of the country.
 
NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY (NJHS)
The purpose of the NJHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage good citizenship in the students of secondary schools. The St. Louis chapter was formed to recognize the 7th and 8th grade students who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, and also demonstrate qualities of leadership, character, good citizenship, and willingness to render service to their school community. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state and World level. Thousands of teams throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
 
SAFETY PATROLS
Students in grades 6-8 have an opportunity to serve the school community by helping establish and promote a safe environment particularly during dismissal times. School safety patrols work in teams on assigned days to assist younger students in getting to their cars safely.
 
STEM CLUB
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Club is open to students in 6th-8th grades. Students have the opportunity to gain practical problem solving, teamwork, and leadership skills while exploring each of the related content areas in greater depth. The STEM Club is designed to be an engaging, hands-on study of activities and careers pertaining to the science, technology, engineering and math fields.
 
STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council at St. Louis takes on the responsibility of representing the whole student body. Participation helps promote leadership, service, student voice and engagement. The student council helps share students' ideas, interests and concerns with school administration while helping students develop a better understanding of how the democratic process works.  The council often raises funds for school-wide activities including social events, parish/community projects, and helping people in need. Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate in the student council. Each grade selects a representative and alternate. In addition, 8th grade students may opt to run for one of the board positions of President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer. Seventh grade students may run for the position of Parliamentarian. All members must maintain good academic standing.
 
TRAIL LIFE
St. Louis parish Trail Life Troop VA-2907 is a Church-Based, Christ-Centered, Boy-Focused mentoring and discipleship journey that speaks to the heart of a boy. Established on timeless values derived from the Bible and set in the context of outdoor adventure, boys from Kindergarten through 12th grade are engaged in a Troop setting by male mentors where they are challenged to grow in character, understand their purpose, serve their community, and develop practical leadership skills to carry out the mission for which they were created. 
 
YEARBOOK
The Yearbook Committee is open to students in grades 7 and 8. Students work in small groups to create pages for our school yearbook under the guidance of faculty advisors. Meetings are held monthly between January and April.
